Kentucky Women’s Justice Community Overdose Innovation Network (WJCOIN-II)

Study Information

This study targets women with a history of opioid and/or stimulant use disorders who are transitioning from three jails in rural Appalachian Kentucky to the community. Investigators are comparing two approaches to support the women’s recovery before they are released from jail: Recovery Coaching (RC) alone and Recovery Coaching with Support Person Engagement (RC+SPE). These programs aim to create overdose prevention plans and boost motivation for treatment after release. Post-release, participants will either continue to receive these interventions in the community alone, or the addition, of contingency management (CM), which offers rewards for behaviors like reducing drug use. The team is examining the effectiveness of these specific intervention components as part of an overdose prevention intervention package for lowering overdose risk and improving treatment entry and retention for women during community re-entry, both those who have and have not started treatment within a month after release.. The study also involves analyzing how women and stakeholders perceive the interventions’ appropriateness and acceptability, identifying barriers and facilitators to successful implementation, and assessing the cost-effectiveness of these interventions.

Study Aims

  • Compare the effectiveness of pre-release RC to RC+SPE in decreasing women’s overdose risk during reentry to rural communities
  • Compare the additive effectiveness of CM initiated post-release to RC alone and RC+SPE in decreasing overdose risk and increasing treatment entry and retention among women during reentry to rural communities
  • Contextualize the effectiveness of intervention components by examining the roles of perceived acceptability and appropriateness and identify barriers and facilitators to intervention implementation across the reentry continuum
  • Examine the economic impact of the WJCOIN-II Opioid Prescribing Improvement Program intervention components pre-release and post-release in reducing women’s overdose risk in rural communities
