The Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA), a program office within the Office of Justice Programs (OPJ), collaborated with the National Institute of Corrections (NIC) to publish the Guidelines for Managing Substance Withdrawal in Jails: A Tool for Local Government Officials, Jail Administrators, Correctional Officers and Health Care Professionals. This toolkit furthers the department’s goal of expanding access to evidence-based treatment in clinical and correctional settings for people with substance use disorders (SUD) and those at risk of overdosing, including individuals who are incarcerated or reentering their community. Sandy Springer, MD, from Yale and a JCOIN grantee, was on the panel that developed these guidelines.
