Do you want to estimate substance use prevention and treatment needs in your community? The Cascade of Care (COC) Toolkit was developed to assist local and state communities, agencies, and other stakeholders who seek to improve access to treatment for people with substance use disorder (SUD). The COC Toolkit provides data to support efforts to improve approaches to addressing treatment needs for different populations. You can get estimates of your local population’s rates of people at-risk for SUD, in need of treatment, initiating treatment, engaging in treatment, and completing treatment. The COC Toolkit is free to use. It is flexible, and you can review as many populations as you like. You can download your data in different formats for easy sharing.

This example below illustrates that, based on data from the National Household Survey of Drug Use and Health the Treatment Episodes Dataset (Discharges), and the U.S. Census, a policymaker or planner in this jurisdiction can estimate that about 16% of the population is at-risk for SUD, 4% are in need of SUD treatment, and fewer than 1% have initiated treatment, engaged in or completed treatment, or are in remission. These estimates can help users plan for public health initiatives like prevention campaigns and ensuring that the community has adequate treatment slots available. Users can filter these estimates by substance and by different demographics.
For those interested in learning more about the Cascade of Care model, we encourage you to participate in the following JCOIN online course--JCOIN Virtual Course: Cascade of Care | Coordinating Substance Use Disorder Treatment Services for Justice-Involved Individuals.
This course will provide the user with information around:

A step-by-step guide to implementing data-driven strategies for substance use disorder care using the Cascade of Care Toolkit.

A practical workbook for applying the Cascade of Care Toolkit and improving data-driven SUD care in your agency.
We encourage you to reach out to the JCOIN Technical Assistance team if you encounter issues or have questions about the JCOIN COC Toolkit.
