Planning Initiative to Build Bridges Between Jail and Community-Based Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder

BJA Comprehensive Opioid Abuse ProgramThe Institute for Intergovernmental Research (IIR) recently released a solicitation on behalf of the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) in partnership with Arnold Ventures to support communities through a planning initiative to develop a comprehensive continuum of care to provide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) in jails and enhance collaboration with community providers. Eligible applicants include local governments and federally recognized Indian tribal governments. Applications were due by 5:00 pm ET on March 25, 2019.

Although medication-assisted treatment (MAT) combined with counseling and recovery support has been proven to be effective for opioid use disorders, its availability is limited in communities and jails. Due to the high number of incarcerated individuals who have opioid use disorders, there is a missed opportunity to initiate treatment during incarceration and after release into the community. There is great potential for implementing MAT in jails and enhancing collaboration between jails and community providers, but this can be difficult for local jurisdictions to accomplish.
