Ending the HIV Epidemic for Persons Who Use Drugs: The Practical Challenges of Meeting People Where They Are

Summary

The four-pillar evidence-based EHE plan’s primary goal is to reduce the number of new HIV infections by 90% by 2030 and includes recommendations to (1) test everyone for HIV; (2) treat those who test positive with RAPID antiretrovirals and ensure viral suppression; (3) prevent those who test negative with provision of rapid PrEP and syringe services for those who inject drugs; and (4) predict new outbreaks and rapidly respond by deployment of prevention and treatment services. The EHE plan however did not include plans to help some of the most vulnerable people—people who use drugs.
